The Gathering Storm

Battle of Boltstrike

Into the melee

Rushing toward the tower, our heroes meet a panicked Varis, who tells them what has happened before teleporting to the top to fight off the invaders.

The party fights to the top of the tower, enduring much acid spray from above and fearsome spear-wielding, arm-chomping lizardfolk warriors on the way. When they arrive at the top of the tower, Jolum is performing a ritual, sacrificing captured tower guards to the broken magical flame.

RIP Jolum…?

After dispatching the remaining invaders and bringing Jolum to his breaking point (with the help of fearsome and antagonistic attacks by the halfling wizard who hates him), all atop the tower are shocked to see the haughty elf transform into a fearsome, many-limbed dragon-thing.

With renewed aggression, the dragon-thing formerly known as Jolum renders Teliu unconscious and barely escapes with its life when a final savage attack from Mord sends it careening off the tower.

RIP dragon…?

After pausing only briefly to fully revive Varis and the other guards, the three adventurers decide to dispatch the wounded dragon, which has been struggling to free itself from the rubble of one of the tower’s outbuildings. Varis and the guards hurry to the aid of their fellows in routing the remaining lizardfolk.

Unfortunately, even a critically wounded dragon is extremely dangerous to all but the most battle-hardened of the Empire, and Mord and Teliu have soon fallen to its vicious attacks.
Only Davead is left to face its might, and even with the sacrificial attack of the brave guard Jimson, things aren’t looking good…

Let's get this party started.

Paths align in Axis

Davead, on errand from the Brotherhood of the Red Wastes, brings a magical weapon to the Golden Order.
Mord, an up-and-coming member of the Imperial Guard, is assigned to accompany Davead to Boltstrike Pillar in Sword Point—the weapon’s final destination.
Teliu, a son of the overworld marooned on the land, is seeking translation of a book given to him by a former mentor. He learns that a man named Varis may be able to help, and that man is at Boltstrike Pillar…

I’ll meet you at the crossroads

After a Horizon-bound caravan leaves the three at a side road to Boltstrike, Teliu introduces himself and the motley crew decide to stick together for safety. Upon arrival at the Pillar, they meet a surly commander who takes the weapon, which is meant to replace the tower’s currently malfunctioning power source—Glaezentorg the Bloody, a magical cutlass. Her second in command, a wizard named Varis, offers to translate Teliu’s book and invites the party to rest nearby.

Party of five

While the group sits around a campfire, they spot a party of goblins sneaking by and leap into battle. These goblins bear the mark of the Diabolist, and one of the wretched things births a messenger imp which manages to escape across a river. A goblin shaman also escapes (mostly) intact.

Upon reporting news of this encounter to Varis, he explains that the tower’s protective magic has recently become faulty. Teliu also learns that Jolum is the elven envoy sent to retrieve the malfunctioning power source of the tower and immediately becomes suspicious. The party agrees to travel to nearby Greenstand and activate its magical defenses, where the tower’s wizard’s have discovered a raiding party of hobgblins and the like lying in wait.

I get down off the wall

As Teliu, Mord, and Davead approach Greenstand, they hear a terrible commotion, followed by silence. They find a scene of carnage, with most of the raiding party destroyed by what appears to have been some kind of dragon-led force. Teliu takes evidence that the hobgoblins served the Diabolist, and the three head back to the Pillar.

Just before they reach the tower, they witness a horrible scene unfold atop it:
A huge blue dragon blasts the tower’s magical focus with a stream of lightning while lizardmen pour off its back and engage the tower’s meager defenders. The commander manages to return fire, ripping off one of the dragon’s wings and sending it crashing to the ground below. Jolum, now holding Glaezentorg, suddenly turns on the commander and murders her.
